FAQ

What is diamond painting, and what does Kate do?

Diamond painting is a relaxing craft where you place thousands of tiny sparkling resin "drills" onto a sticky, gridded canvas to recreate an image — like paint-by-numbers, but with gems.

Kate turns any image you like into a printable diamond painting pattern: pick a photo (or drawing, or cartoon), choose your colours and size, fine-tune it, and print it at home.

Can I crop my image or add text inside Kate? And how do I set my image up properly?

Kate doesn't crop images or add text itself — and it doesn't need to, because your phone already does both beautifully. A quick prep in your gallery gives the best possible pattern.

Before Kate (in your phone's photo gallery):

  1. Choose your image.
  2. Crop it to exactly what you want — trimming busy backgrounds gives a cleaner result.
  3. Add any text or styling (names, dates, a border) with your gallery's editor — it becomes part of the image Kate converts.

In Kate:

  1. Tap New pattern and pick your prepared image.
  2. Tune the number of colours and the grid size (which sets your drill count and finished canvas size) — watch the preview update.
  3. When you're happy, edit by hand if you like — zoom right in and repaint individual drills.

One thing to know: once you start hand-editing, Kate locks the size and colour settings for that copy so your edits can't be wiped by a resize. Editing always saves as a new copy, so your original is never lost — tune size and colours first, then edit to perfect it.

What kind of image works best?

Simpler, clearer images work best. Diamond painting is "physical pixel art" — each drill is one little square, so very fine detail gets lost. A clear subject, good lighting, and not-too-busy a background give the sharpest result. Cropping close to your subject helps a lot. Higher grid sizes capture more detail (but mean more drills to place).

How do I turn the printout into a canvas I can stick drills onto?

It's the same as a shop-bought kit, just made by you:

  1. Print your pattern at home at Actual Size / 100% on normal paper.
  2. Lay a double-sided adhesive sheet over the printout — peel one side and stick it on top of the printed pattern (overlap slightly to cover any gaps).
  3. Peel off the top liner and place your drills onto the sticky surface, following the printed grid.

For a large (multi-page) pattern, do each sheet, then mount the finished sheets together on an adhesive foam board.

What else do I need to buy?

Kate makes the pattern — you supply the physical bits, the same as any DIY kit: the drills (from brands like Diamond Dotz, Artdot or DiamondDrillsUSA) and double-sided adhesive sheets (easy to find on Amazon). A drill pen and tray are handy too. Kate tells you exactly how many drills of each colour you need.

Is Kate free? What costs money?

Kate is free to download, and free to build and preview your pattern — pick an image, tune the colours and size, and edit it, so you see exactly how it'll turn out. Printing or exporting your finished patterns needs a one-time unlock (never a subscription). You only pay once you've seen your result and want to keep it.

What are the two print modes?

A Working chart prints your pattern as a comfortable, easy-to-read symbol chart across several pages — you follow it like a map while placing drills on a separate adhesive canvas.

A True-size kit prints the pattern at the real finished size, so the printout itself becomes your canvas (add an adhesive sheet and place drills straight onto it).

Choose whichever suits how you like to work.

Why is my printed chart bigger than the "finished art" size?

Good question! The "finished art" size is how big your actual diamond painting will be once it's made (at true drill size). The Working chart prints larger than that on purpose — each square is enlarged so the symbol inside it is easy to read while you work. So the chart you tape together is bigger than the finished painting.

(If you want the printout to be the exact finished size, use the True-size kit mode instead.)

How do I make sure it prints at the right scale?

In your printer's options, choose Actual Size or 100% — not "Fit to Page", which shrinks everything so the drills won't line up. Page 1 of your chart has a printed ruler line: lay a real ruler against it after printing to confirm it measures correctly.

Does Kate work on tablets? And what's Samsung DeX?

Yes — Kate works on Android phones and tablets, with a roomier layout on bigger screens. It also works with Samsung DeX.

DeX lets you plug a Samsung phone into a monitor or TV and use it like a desktop, with a mouse and keyboard — so you can see your pattern on a big screen and edit comfortably, while your phone does the work. You don't need DeX, but it's lovely for detailed editing on a large display.

Does Kate work offline? What data does it collect?

Kate works fully offline — everything happens on your device. It has no ads, no account, and no sign-up, and it doesn't collect your data or send your images anywhere. Your photos and patterns stay on your phone.
